It is almost time for summer to come to an end which means college dorm preparation should be at its peak! With such a small space, students often become frazzled and overwhelmed by the lack of space for their carloads of stuff! It is important to maximize space and use multifunctional furniture. Here are some tips to create the most space in a college dorm room!

  1. Downsize

All your furniture from home won’t fit, so bring essentials only – bed sheets, a desk lamp, computer, pillows, etc. Avoid duplicating larger furniture (refrigerator, TV, microwave, etc.), by agreeing which roommate will bring what. Communication is key in order to make sure that the dorm is fit with all the essentials between each roommate!

  1. Purchase multi-purpose furniture

Some dorm rooms have to function as both sleeping quarters and a living room. Futons and ottomans are not only multi-functional and stylish, but are space savers as well. An ottoman can provide extra seating and additional storage options for books, gadgets and DVDs. A futon, on the other hand, can double as a bed and a place to study.

  1. Take advantage of lofted or raised beds

Lofting your bed can allow lots of extra space for a futon, desk, or dresser to go below your bed. This is great for hanging out with friends, as it adds extra seating to your room! If lofting isn’t your thing, raising your bed is a great option. This allows for extra storage room underneath which can be filled with large bins, organizers, and even a fridge.

  1. Remove clutter

A floor covered in dirty laundry and a desk filled with piles of paper can make a small room feel tiny. Decluttering can be daunting, so do it a little at a time by devoting 10-15 minutes a day to the task. Also, don’t hoard; get rid of things you don’t need. Dirt and grime can also be overwhelming so mini vacuums, trashcans, and sanitized wipes are essential to keep germs and sickness from infiltrating your small space!

  1. Hang mirrors

Adding mirrors to make a room appear bigger is one of the oldest tricks in the book. If your space still feels cramped, consider buying a floor-length mirror. From creating depth to bringing in more light, mirrors have many benefits and don’t cost a fortune.

  1. Get organized

The back of a door is often overlooked as a storage space. Over-the-door organizers are inexpensive and easy to install. Aside from organizing shoes, they can be used to store bath products, accessories, snacks and jewelry. Closet hanger organizers help to save space and keep you organized! Don’t forget the importance of dividers for drawers, school supplies, shoes, etc!
